The Human Future

Description

Re-edited Short (Duration: 5m58s)

Music & Sound Design by Jiabei Tang

Hybrid sound sources: I recorded oboe (including extended techniques such as reed-only blowing and key tapping), piano, and violin, along with materials from my custom-built sequencer and various noise recordings. These elements were used to create a layered acoustic texture. By combining them with electronic sound sources, I built a hybrid sound world that

blends live instruments with synthesized tones.

Custom digital sequencing: I designed a music sequencer in Max/MSP and used Ableton Live instruments to create ambient and textural material. After recording and editing these synthesized sounds, I integrated them into key sections of the film so the sonic atmosphere evolves with the narrative.

Creative transformation of recorded material: I reshape noise, instrumental details, and environmental recordings into atmospheric layers or cinematic sound effects through modulation, filtering, and textural processing. For example, the scraped piano string was processed into an ambient bed for the film’s third section, and recorded key-drop sounds were used as transition effects and also layered into the drum patterns.

Integration of music, sound effects, and narrative: I balance music and sound effects, designing sound gestures that follow the visuals and reinforce the narrative.

This project demonstrates my strengths in hybrid timbre design, combining electronic and

acoustic sources, creating custom tools, and building narrative-focused sound structures.
